Newton Koemel Spotlight

College life always pushes us to look forward, chasing the next goal or achievement, but do not

forget to glance back every now and then. The moments and lessons left behind are what shape

the road ahead. That is why this edition of the Bell Ringer highlights one of our own alumni and

the past of Saddle Tramps.

This spotlight features Newton Koemel, a proud member of the Fall 2016 “Hub City Hell

Raisers” pledge class.

When asked about his favorite Saddle Tramps memory, Newton did not hesitate to say,” Carol of

Lights. It’s always a magical time where the University gets together to celebrate the holidays,

and it was special to be a part of it.”

For Newton, Saddle Tramps was not just an organization; it

was a community. He shared how the brotherhood helped

him through tough times and shaped his perspective. “I met

my closest college friends through Tramps… My pledge class

had guys from all different background, and getting to know

them gave me perspective that I use in the real world.”

Since leaving Saddle Tramps, Newton states that his biggest

achievement has been earning his Master’s in Food Sciences

from Texas Tech, a milestone that required him to lean on the lessons he learned in Saddle

Tramps: perseverance, teamwork, and asking for help when needed.

His advice for current and future Tramps? “Make the time to attend events. School is important,

yes, but college goes by too fast. I’d give anything to be back at a sporting event, wrapping Will

or ringing the victory bells with my brothers.”Stay tuned for more alumni stories in upcoming editions of the Bell Ringer, because every story

reminds us why these traditions matter.

In football news, Texas Tech’s team played Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their season opener. Texas

Tech scored 47 points to none by halftime. When halftime started, the weather had become

dangerous, so the game was delayed for about an hour and a half until it finally resumed at 10

pm with the teams playing two 8-minute quarters. The game ended just before 11 pm, with the

final score of 67-7.

Week 2, Texas Tech played Kent State. With it being a morning non-conference game, the

attendance was low, but the crowd

showed out, and the Saddle Tramps got to

show off their all-new white workshirts.

The game started off easy, and the score

was 49-0 in Tech’s favor by halftime.

With no rain delay this week, Texas Tech

finished off the game with an amazing 62-14 points to secure the Red Raider victory.
